Todt: Monaco rout was a one-off
29 May 2007
Ferrari team principal Jean Todt believes his team’s heavy defeat by McLaren in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix is unlikely to be repeated at the next round of the championship in Canada.
Felipe Massa finished third in Monte Carlo, over a minute behind the two McLarens, while team mate Kimi Raikkonen came home eighth, having started 16th on the grid following his qualifying accident.
"We all know that Monte Carlo is a specific place," Todt told Ferrari’s official website. "Take last years race and the one before and you will see that the 2006 Monte Carlo race was different to Canada, two weeks afterwards. I would say we have some history, some documentation about that."
Todt admitted that McLaren were the quicker team, but explained that their margin of victory wasn’t purely down to superior pace. In qualifying Massa finished less than a tenth of a second behind Lewis Hamilton, but the Brazilian had other issues to contend with during the race.
“If you take it up to the first pit stop, Felipe was right behind Hamilton,” said Todt. “Then we decided to put on softer tyres, the others stayed on the harder tyres. Then Felipe took over five laps to pass one car and in those five laps he lost 15 seconds. (那您到底是为什么这时候换呢?)We knew the best he could do was third unless the others in front had a problem."(我们大家也都是这样想的……)
Massa remains very much in touch in the driver standings - third, on 22 points, five behind Alonso and Hamilton. After his disappointing Monaco weekend, Raikkonen lies fourth, another ten points adrift. Nevertheless, Todt insists the Finn is far from out of the hunt.
"Its still very open, very open,” he said. “If there were two races to go, then a 15 point deficit would be impossible. But 15 points with 12 races to go, which is an average of 1.25 points per race, is not so much."(同志们,让我们都铭记这个算法罢~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)
There is no testing between Monaco and the forthcoming back-to-back Canadian and US rounds, but Todt insisted Ferrari will be pushing hard to close the gap to their rivals, both in terms of performance and reliability.(去年美国站很好啊,加拿大也不太赖,Monaco这个鬼地方还是个例,个例)
"We have a few modifications which we will have for the next race,” explained Todt. “You must always push harder. We respect our competitors very much. They are very good, they are very strong. They have been more reliable than us at the beginning of the season. Some others are fighting hard behind us, so we have to push.”
With five rounds of the season complete, Ferrari trail McLaren by 20 points in the constructors’ championship, 56 to 76. BMW Sauber lie third on 30.

Exclusive interview with Jean Todt
22 May 2007
Those who predicted Ferrari would struggle without Michael Schumacher and Ross Brawn clearly misjudged the Italian team’s strength - three wins from four races in ’07 has shown there is far more to them than one or two key men. CEO Jean Todt discusses Felipe Massa’s resurgence, Kimi Raikkonen’s adjustment to life with the Scuderia, and those ongoing reliability issues…
Q: Three wins from four races is a fantastic ratio. But for the moment it looks as though this years championships will go to the team able to regularly get both cars onto the podium. Would you agree?
Jean Todt: Yes, reliability is crucial, as indeed it has always been. The outcome of this first leg of the championship is positive from a performance point of view but not so much in terms of reliability.
Q: Your technical director Mario Almondo admitted there are some outstanding reliability issues and quoted your current focus as being 51 percent reliability and 49 percent performance enhancement. What are you concentrating on most in each area, and what was addressed at the Paul Ricard test?
JT: We are working on both reliability and performance because in Formula One you cannot allow yourself to stop development on the car, given how competitive our competitors are. At Paul Ricard, we worked towards Monaco and the following races in North America, which are run on medium-fast speed circuits. This year, with the new format for private testing, it is vital to carry out tests in a planned and efficient manner because there are not that many opportunities to test between one Grand Prix and another.
Q: Felipe Massa was criticized for his performance at the Malaysian Grand Prix, but has since bounced back with two flawless wins in Bahrain and Spain. Not bad for a driver who not so long ago was considered a solid number two. Have you been surprised by Massa’s performance so far this season?
JT: Felipe was criticised from outside the team but definitely not from within it. (热泪盈眶了~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)We knew we could count on him as a winning driver and we are well aware of his abilities both as a driver and as a man. Furthermore, you only have to look at the way he went last year - Felipe’s first season with a top team, in which he finished third in the championship with two great wins under his belt in Istanbul and Sao Paulo. We are not surprised at what he is doing even if others might be.
Q: Would Ferrari still have signed Kimi Raikkonen had they known the full extent of Massa’s potential? For years, the team’s policy has been to have an outstanding number-one driver and a reliable number two…
JT: Our policy has always been to treat two drivers equally.(你这个就真的有点睁着眼睛说瞎话了……没有哪个队是这样的~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~) Obviously, when you have the best driver at the time - as was the case with Michael Schumacher - then the way the championship evolves has always gone a certain way. When Kimi signed with Ferrari we did not know whether Michael planned to continue driving or not. Then he made his decision and we were more than happy to be able to extend our contract with a young and talented driver like Felipe. We had in fact noticed Felipe right from the days he was running in lower formulae and thus we had at our disposal a really well matched and balanced combination.
Q: How well has Raikkonen integrated into the team and how are you two getting on?
JT: Kimi feels very much at ease with the team and vice versa. He is a genuine and sincere lad and here he has found an open and cooperative atmosphere. Personally, I get on very well with Kimi. I have always liked him both as a driver and in terms of the way he is out of the cockpit, always remaining the same in what is the difficult world of Formula One.
Q: Ferrari showed their pace in Barcelona with a victory. Can we expect this form to continue in Monaco? Ferrari enjoyed their last win in Monte Carlo in 2001…
JT: I am not the sort to make predictions. All I will say is that, as usual, we have left nothing to chance in our efforts to return to winning ways in this race, which is so special and prestigious. But we know it will be very difficult.
Q: In 2009 we will see the opening of the worlds first Ferrari theme park in Abu Dhabi. What was the philosophy behind choosing this location? And how much was the decision to go there propelled by the possibility of an Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?
JT: We wanted to create an environment in which fans of the Ferrari marque could live through an experience of our world. We considered the Persian Gulf to be developing significantly in terms of tourism and Mubadala, having become shareholders of ours, showed great enthusiasm for strengthening our ties and hence this project was born. The park will provide the opportunity to get to know the Ferrari world through the 24 different attractions that are being built, as well as on the track. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix can but go in the right direction, confirming the desire of the Government of the country to make more of a name for itself, as can also be seen from the agreement it has reached with the Louvre museum.(这一段过分虚幻了吧~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)
Q: How much longer do you plan to remain in Formula One racing? You have mentioned previously that you have considered retirement? Is this still in your thoughts?
JT: Today, as CEO of Ferrari, I have taken on even more significant responsibilities on a global level. Among my responsibilities is ensuring that the Scuderia consolidates even more its position at the pinnacle of Formula One racing.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
screen.width/2)this.width=screen.width/2; >
screen.width/2)this.style.width=screen.width/2;>

Night race key to Melbourne GP future
By Matt Beer Sunday, May 20th 2007, 07:49 GMT
Bernie Ecclestone has warned the Melbourne authorities that the citys Formula One race is under threat unless the event becomes a night race.
In an interview with the Sunday Herald Sun newspaper, Ecclestone reiterated his belief that the Australian Grand Prix should be held at a more accessible time for European audiences, and said that the night race issue was critical to contract talks.(靠,来算一下时差好了,如果澳大利亚改成夜赛,十个小时的时差,那么是上午或中午,美洲呢,美洲现在的时间,六个小时的时差,刚好和我们看欧洲站是一个感觉,果然老头真为欧洲人着想……)
Melbournes current deal to host the Australian GP expires after 2010.(还有几年……
"When the contract comes up, we have to have a look and see exactly what we will be doing with Melbourne," Ecclestone said.
"Unless they can come up with something satisfactory, Im pretty sure we wouldnt be able to continue there.
"I would like to make sure we can watch (the race) in Europe and other parts of the world at a respectable time rather than having to get up at three or four in the morning(那照顾我们一下把美洲该个时间罢,要不然就不要说什么other parts of the world).
"(Australian GP boss) Ron (Walker) is not stupid and he knows exactly what is at stake."
A spokesman for Victorias Tourism Minister Tim Holding said that formal discussions about both the contract extension and the night race issue had not yet commenced.
"We strongly support the race," the spokesman told the Sunday Herald Sun.
"The contract runs until 2010, but we havent begun negotiating that yet. And a night Grand Prix has never been formally proposed.
"Ultimately the Victorian Government will decide what is best for Melbourne."
